HAS THE AFRICAN UNION BECOME A LAME DUCK?
Article by Sangome Sobisa
Dear Sir,
I would like to commend your comment on the AU committee whose chair has been given to Museveni. It is an astonishment to many - knowing that there are other qualified leaders in the AU who have a better spirit for Africa and the Africans. I even questioned whether it was the right time to give Obasanjo the chair of the AU Assembly for the obvious reasons you know in Nigeria and you now see in the Darfur crisis!
But I also asked myself why the Pan-African Parliament hasn't reacted loudly on the atrocities going on in Darfur? They would have tried to hold an extra-ordinary session to discuss this specific issue. Why African leaders are sending monitors to monitor the killings of the civilians by the Janjaweed [be done] well to their murderous taste? Does AUF believe that there is no genocide committed in Darfur? Should we really believe that the AU under Konare, Mbeki and Mongella has now become a lame duck?
I think it is high time that AUF expresses explicitly this disappointment to all those who claim to take charge of the AU but in reality they have no interest in helping Africa and the Africans becoming better. Perhaps, AUF with its constructive ideas and skills can help solve this puzzle which is sacrificing the people of Darfur for demonic reasons.
