AU COMMISSION'S INITIATIVES ARE CAUSING CONFUSION
Article by Julo Mangresso
Dear Editor,
It is daunting to hear that the AU Peace and Security Council adopted a policy of non-indifference in issues of conflict resolution in Africa in order to protect its people, distancing itself from the former OAU policy of non-interference. Yet resently in Abuja, the Heads of states adopted a policy of non-aggression. Could they clarify its logic and the difference in meaning between what they termed as non-aggression from what was meant before as non-interference to be free from contradicting what the Peace and Security Council means by non-indifference?
I think in the AU there is a lot of confusion now; if not a mercenary occupation - as mercenaries don't have to come from outside Africa as some are inclined to believe. The AU Commission despises what OAU did but I very much doubt whether they can do it better than their predecessors. Till now they have betrayed the people of Darfur, Eastern Congo and Northern Uganda for the pretext of the jargon: "Africans solving their own African problems" while they never act by themselves without waiting for other countries or the UN do for them! It is a contradiction in terms. It is absurd.
