PAP TRUST FUND IS THE BEST WAY TO MOVE AFRICA FORWARD
Miria Matembe, Member of the PAP
July 2005: Dan Kashagama, General Secretary of the AUF, met and held discussions with Ms. Miria Matembe, Chair of the Pan African Parliament's Rules Committee.
Miria Matembe is one of Africa's most popular and powerful leaders. She is the leading defender of women's rights in Africa, and has extensive experience in promoting ethics in the conduct of government and in constitution-making. She is also a close ally of AU President Gertrude Mongella. Miria Matembe's discussions with Dan Kashagama included:
-the importance and necessity of the PAP Trust Fund.
-Relations between the Pan African Parliament and the AU Commission
-Relations between the PAP and the Assembly of Heads of State
-the problems and constraints confronting the PAP
-raising the international profile of the PAP
-the future of Pan African advocacy groups and political parties
Dan Kashagama, AUF General Secretary
As a result of the discussions, the AUF has committed to publicise the PAP Trust Fund. Without an independent and self-sufficient PAP, the African Union will remain at the mercy of narrow states interests, and careerist bureaucrats who have no respect for Parliamentary democracy. The PAP needs access to funds so that it can fulfil its mandate, and pay for its expenses and operations, without any restrictions.
June 2005: Dan Kashagama held discussions with Hedy Fry, Canadian Member of Parliament on raising the profile of the PAP worldwide. Ms. Fry promised to keep the PAP in the media and on the agenda in the Canadian Parliament.
March-June 2005: AUF protested plans to deploy NATO troops in Sudan. The initial decision to deploy a NATO brigade in Africa was done without the consent of the PAP. Dan Kashagama also led protest of NATO involvement at high-profile conference on Darfur. Promoters of NATO at meeting included Canadian Senator Mobina Jaffer, Canada's main liaison with NATO on Darfur. Canadian air force Gen. Ray Henault is the current chairman of NATO's military committee. Subsequent to the protest NATO dropped plans to deploy troops in Darfur.
