BIOGRAPHIES OF AUF LEADERS
Caroline Kamau
Dr. Caroline Kamau is the Chair of the AUF National Committee, and President of the AUF. She is fiercely committed to the Pan African cause, and is an academic, writer and a feminist.
She was born in Nairobi , Kenya , and is currently a Lecturer in Psychology at Southampton Solent University , Britain. She has lectured Psychology at Florida State University ’s London Centre, and was previously a research associate at the University of Kent in Britain. Her research is in the social psychological field of Group Processes, examining ethnic identity strategies, compunction emotions between groups, and cross-cultural explorations of group phenomena.'
Clement Apaak
Clement Apaak is the founder of Canadian Students for Darfur, which has been instrumental in promoting the resolution of the genocidal war in Darfur. Clement Apaak has served as president of the Simon Fraser Student Society. He is a student senator at SFU, a Ph.D candidate in the university’s department of archeology, and is the host of “African Connection” on CJSF 90.1FM radio station. The radio broadcast aims to correct "age-old misconceptions" about the Africa and to give a voice to African-Canadians. Clement Apaak spent part of 2005 in the Danakil desert in Eastern Africa, tracing the millenia-old salt-trade route and collecting data for his doctoral thesis in archaeology. Apaak is originally from Ghana.
Heinrich Volmink
South African medical doctor who was trained and served in an environment strongly influenced by the principles of community health. Completed internship in specialised units in Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. Subsequently held a post as a Community Service Medical Officer in a rural hospital in South Africa, serving a community beset with dire socio-economic circumstances (most notably poverty and the effects of HIV/AIDS). Has done locum work as a Senior House Officer within the National Health Service (NHS-Scotland). Also has been involved with faith-based/ Church work both in South Africa and in Scotland.
Currently working as the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) men’s health officer with REACH Community Health Project in Glasgow, Scotland. This involves building networks with an ethnically diverse range of BME men, working with mainstream representatives (e.g. NHS, Glasgow City Council) to raise awareness of BME men’s health issues within the current public policy framework, and ensuring that BME men have meaningful opportunities to participate in policy discussions about services relating to their health needs. The post also involves leading in a BME Men’s Health Research Project, as well as participating in the development of a framework for an accessible community based BME Men’s Health Clinic Service
Julian Bauer
Prof. Dr. Julian Bauer is one of the world's leading environmentalists, and is the founder of ECOTERRA International. He is a Trustee and Co-Founder of Millennium Tree Foundation. Prof. Bauer is also one of the world's leading human rights organizers, and continues to advocate for the protection of oppressed and marginalised communities around the world. Julian Bauer is Professor in Tropical Ecology, and teaches at the University of Nairobi.
Nikitah Imani
Rev. Dr. Nikitah Okembe-RA Imani is Associate Professor of Sociology and African Studies at James Madison University. His bachelor's degree was received from the Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service and he received a master's in political science concentrating in international affairs from the University of Florida.
His undergraduate advisor was Dr. Madeleine Albright and he studied with Ambassador Viron Vaky, and other Foreign Service and state department luminaries. Imani was also a United States Senate Youth Scholar for the William Randolph Hearst Foundation.
He has considerable community service experience in his capacities as an ordained African Orthodox, Southern Baptist minister, and a traditional Kemetian priest. He serves as associate pastor at Bethel AME Church in Harrisonburg. He has served in a myriad of administrative capacities, and has published several books including "Beyond the Agony", Mbongi" and "Kinzozi".
He founded Reapalife, a multimedia company that creates films, video games, artwork, music, and publications. He has been a poet and hip-hop artist for more than 20 years. He also does an international internet radio show "Freedom or Death" and frequently may be found on the political, fundraising, community development, and/or educational lecture and conferencing circuit on behalf of African peoples worldwide.
Mongezi Sefika wa Nkomo
Mongezi Sefika wa Nkomo is an experienced Pan African organizer and Human Rights activist. He was founding chair of the Kingwilliamstown branch of the Black Peoples Convention (BPC) in January 1973, and was one of the organizers of cultural conscientizers of high school students from 1973, and this led to Soweto-led National Students and Youth Uprising of 1976. Mongezi is currently involved in multi-party initiatives throughout Africa, and is the founder of Azania Heritage International.
Geoffrey Bazira,
Bazira is the president and founder of Dreampsparrow Consulting, Inc., a web development company that delivers software and services to create and manage real-time internet content to major corporations. He has several years of international experience in organizing and establishing computer technologies and wireless telecommunications.
Evelyn Joe,
Evelyn Joe is on the Board of Directors of African Alliance Foundation (AAF), a new initiative with an empowering vision for Africans to advocate for positive change in the lives of Africans politically and economically, both in the Diaspora and on the Continent. AAF is designed as an umbrella organization for African organizations. She is also the producer of African Union Page, an interactive website of the Renaissance Foundation. She also served on the Board of Vision In Action, a Washington-based NGO with volunteers in developing countries.
Ms Joe employs her hands-on experience in media, World Affairs and strategic management to articulate issues of varied concerns. Currently, she is involved in organizing a series of events aimed at identifying and marshaling African human resources in response to the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD's) challenge in redressing Brain Drain.
Dan Kashagama,
Kashagama has worked with Kenya Television Network (KTN) and with British Columbia Television (BCTV) on news assignments covering a wide variety of international and cross-boundary issues, including chronic instability and the recurrent refugee crises in the Horn of Africa and in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. Kashagama has served as executive administrator of the Canadian Network for International Surgery; as Chair and CEO of the African Canadian Association of British Columbia; and, as editor of several publications, including the Operative Report, covering Essential Surgical Skills programs and Injury Control and Prevention developments in Africa.
