Dear Muluh Mbuh,
The Joint Military Commission in charge of overseeing the ceasefire, disengagement and withdrawal of troops in the DRC is an organ of the AU Political Committee. It has a mandate of the parties involved in the DRC, as well as mandate of the constituent republics of the African Union.
Moreover, the AU organ for Conflict Resolution has been instrumental moving the peace process forward in the Great Lakes Region, in the Mano River Basin, and in the Horn.
The offices of the AU in Addis Ababa have drafted numerous documents that are the basis of the peace initiatives in Africa. They are used by the UN Security Council as well as the UN General Assembly in their deliberations and decision-making relating to matters of governance and human security in Africa and elsewhere.
MONUC in the Congo has worked closely with AU officials to bring the process to where it is now.
The AUF supports the work and intentions of the AU. We believe that we should make their work easier, and we are willing to commit any and all our resources to this end. The mandate of the African Union's Secretariat derives from the Union Act that was ratified by African states including Cameroon.
Moreover, thousands of people in Southern Cameroon continue to support the African Union. The structures for conflict resolution now being established by the AU will help to address some of the concerns of our people of Southern Cameroon.
On the behalf of the AUF, I would like to express my solidarity and support for our brothers and sisters in southern Cameroon and in other parts of Cameroon who continue to suffer the ravages of neocolonialist policies. The AUF deplores the defeatist attitudes of people who undermine and sabotage the peace processes now taking place in Africa. We encourage support for the African Union.
best regards,
Dan Kashagama
