COMMUNITY of SAHEL and SAHARAN STATES [CEN-SAD]
CEN-SAD was adopted by member states as the official name of the grouping of north African states. CEN-SAD stands for the first letters in Arabic of the words Sahel and Sahara.

Objectives
The objective of the Community of the Sahel Saharan States, known as CEN-SAD in Arabic, is to secure the development and stability of the member states. All member states should actively participate in trade by developing economic infrastructure for the improvement of their peoples' livelihood. CEN-SAD also strives for peace and security within member states.
Management
The supreme organ is the Conference of Heads of State of the member countries which sets the work plan of the community at a meeting held annually. The Conference met in 1998 in Tripoli, in 2000 in Chad and in 2001 in Khartoum.
The Executive Council is a council of ministers of the member states which charts out strategy. Then there is the General Secretariat, headed by a General Secretary, which handles the daily activities of the organization.
The African Bank for Development and Trade is the fourth organ of the organization which works for economic integration, development and cooperation among member states. The fifth organ which is to be formed is the Socio-Economic Council which will act as a think-tank for the economic development of member countries and set general guidelines.
