INTERNATIONAL CRIMES AGAINST AFRICANS

Over the last decade, the number of crimes with international implications perpetrated against Africans have increased. The most shocking involve the torture and murder of Africans by Peacekeepers from outside the African Union. The Countries that have prosecuted their citizens for such violations include Canada, Italy and Belgium. In 1997 the Belgian Government decided to 'prosecute without mercy' a soldier for urinating on a dead African in Somalia. Two Belgian paratroopers were charged with assault after burning a Somali civilian.

Canada disbanded its Royal Airborne Division after a judiciary commission found members of the division were engaged in racist anti-African ceremonies and in the torture and burning murder of Shadane Arone, a 16 year old African boy in Somalia. Canadians were also involved in the shooting of several unarmed African civilians during the peacekeeping mission. American troops killed 6000 Africans in Somalia in 1993 (no one has been prosecuted for the killings).
