AIR TRANSPORT IN THE AFRICAN UNION
All major airports in the African Union are modern and run smoothly. There are over 80 airlines in the African Union. Ethiopian Airways, Egypt Air, Ghana Airlines and South African Airways are the largest ones. Most airlines generally comply with FAA regulations on safety and maintenance. The other airlines, including Gambia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe have other standards based on European regulations (the choice is based largely on whether or not an African airline has trans-Atlantic flights).
A large part of the African Union's airspace lacks radio communications and radar, especially recent conflict regions in Angola, and the DRC. However, there is a relatively low frequency of air accidents, and even those occur in regions that are serviced and saturated with adequate communications and radar facilities.
