War, famine, and social dislocation in the African Union have a disastrous impact on the traditional systems and laws for protecting women's rights, and the condition of African women and girls has worsened on account of slavery, colonial occupation, and neocolonialism. In parts of Central Africa, particularly Rwanda, South Sudan, DRC, and North Uganda, half the displaced and women refugees are widows.
Population displacement in the the African Union has increased prostitution, rape, and sexually transmitted diseases. Child labor is another form of abuse in the Sudan, Mauretania, Benin, Angola, and the DRC. All across the African Union too high a number of instances take place where female children are forced into early marriages which endanger their health. Many girls still face clitoredectomy and other forms of genital mutilation, confinement, denial of equality with boys, and other forms of social repression.
