AFRICAN UNION DIPLOMACY

The goal of African diplomacy is to further the African Union's interests, which are dictated by Africa's geography, history, and economics, for the purpose of safeguarding Africa's political independence and territorial integrity. All diplomacy seeks maximum national advantage without using force and preferably without causing resentment.

Below: International Relations Institute of Cameroon
The International Relations Institute of Cameroon [IRIC] is the leading institution in the African Union for training diplomats. The IRIC was created on 27th April 1971. It is one amongst the five Institutions that form the University of Yaounde II. The IRIC has Observer Status at all assemblies and summits of the African Union. Observer Status means that the IRIC has full diplomatic and delegate rights accorded a member state of the African Union, with the exception that it may not cast votes.

IRIC students are drilled on the techniques of multilateral diplomacy with a view of improving their insertion into international organizations. The objectives of the International Relations Institute of Cameroon are: Professional training for foreign service officers in Africa; Research and training of students in international domains; Retraining of administrative staffs and those of the ministries of external Relations. The trainee diplomats must take subjects which are considered essential for the effective conduct of the diplomatic affairs .

Mid-Career Diplomats Participate at a IRIC Forum
IRIC evolves in a solid academical network that comprises of the Institute of Diplomacy and International Studies (IDIS) of Nairobi, the Institute of International Relations of St Augustine (Trinidad and Tobago), the Institute of International Studies of Geneva (Switzerland), and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (Malta). These institutions meet once a year in order to offer to their individual Directors the opportunities to discuss joint endeavours such as the setting up of a computer network among them and the launching of joint publications. Monthly diplomatic forums are also held where by eminent personalities of the diplomatic world as well as business world could take part and holds talks.
