BIOGRAPHY OF AN AFRICAN GENERAL OFFICER

Major General Mountaga Diallo was appointed Force Commander of the Mission of the United Nations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) in March 2000. Before his appointment by the United Nations Secretary-General, General Diallo was the Chief Inspector of the Armed Forces in Senegal.
He began his military career on 11th September 1963. He became Second Lieutenant in 1965 and from there he was successively promoted to the upper military ranks.
He became a Colonel in 1988 and after that Brigadier General in 1997. Since 1st January 1999, he became Major General.
Mountaga Diallo who had been trained in the special Military Academy of Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan (France), got a further training between 1965 and 1966 in another military academy denominated Ecole d’application de l’Infanterie, then he finished his training with some field officer courses in the Airmobile Troops Academy of Pau (France).
In 1971, he was transferred to the Artillery where he was trained in the Artillery Academy and followed a course related to the captain of Artillery.
From 1980 through 1982 he studied at the Ecole Supérieure de Guerre in Paris and obtained his Diploma. Afterwards he attended lectures on Security Strategy in Africa at the Académie Nasser(Egypt).
From May to June 1996 a few months before his promotion to the rank of General Mr. Mountaga Diallo attended lectures at the Institut des Hautes Etudes de Défense Nationale (IEHDN) in Paris.
In addition to the Diploma from the IEHDN, he is also holder of civilian certificates, namely a Diplôme d’Etudes Fondamentales(DEA)in Defense Studies from the University of Sorbonne(Paris).
After serving from 1991 to 1993 as Commander of the Senegalese contingent in Liberia and Head of the liaison Officers with ECOMOG, the CEDEAO Peacekeeping force, M. Mountaga Diallo has been respectively promoted to the ranks of Army Chief of Staff in July 1993, Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff from July 1996 to January 1998
Major General Mountaga Diallo is fluent in French and English. He is married and has four children.
