OVERVIEW OF AUF SOCIO-POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT
THE STRUGGLE TO END REPRESSION
The African Front's Civil and Social Engagement Program aims to move the people along a continuum from knowledge to action, from awareness to participation.
The AUF works to establish political awareness and participation as criteria for normal living in Africa. The mandate of the AUF is to make people aware of their own plight in this regard, to enable them to participate in safeguarding African unity, and to make Policy Coherence the priority in the conduct of international relations. The AUF is also charged with the function of developing concerns with regard to issues of community stabilization and vitalization in Africa.
At present the state of political awareness in Africa suffers the effects of wide scale repression and distortion under an international regime of neocolonialism. Moreover, the colonial occupation and system of Apartheid, as well as racial discrimination internationally, has destroyed Africa's social capital. Civil culture in Africa needs good federal policy, legislation and implementation to restory the social health of our communities and families.
It is of primary importance that political awareness in Africa be elevated rapidly to enable more Africans to become comfortable with political-decision making in their daily lives.
The struggle against repression must not only be defined at desparate moments, but must engage individuals at all times, and in all ways, so that Africans can participate productively. Political process is a vital part of African society that has been abused and distorted by the force and nonresponsiveness of slavery, colonial occupation, and post independence repression all over Africa. A process of massive political rehabilitation must follow.
This process requires massive input in terms of resources. It is important to redefine in true and impartial terms the methods and consequences of slavery, occupation, displacement, criminalization, repression, and conflict, in order to ground ourselves properly in the events that are responsible for the conditions of Africans. It is necessary to revist the contributions of all persons in Africa's past who have defined the political process. That means that there has to be an effort to acknowledge, account for, and celebrate all victims of political, economic, and social repression.
The process of violent political purging has to end, and all victims have to be given back their names, their memories rehabilitated, their contributions recognised, and their families and communities recognised. This must apply to combatants in the various wars and struggles to free Africa, dating as far back in time as is humanly possible.
It is necessary to familiarize all the people with public-political decision-making. Only in this way is it possible to mature a truely consensual political system. This kind of system supercedes electoral and representational democracy...because participants are not a mob, or a mass. They are people who are educated in all kinds of political matters and are able determine what their interests are, and how best to safe-guard them.
Political Engagement in Africa used to be fully integrated in the person's development. However, with the advent of military occupation, slavery and colonial occupation, societal disruptions have created a population that is inhibited and frustrated and at the mercy of choatic forces beyond their comprehesion. This sense of impotency is disastrous to the African, and must be alleviated by all means.
Classical African adults were required to learn public debate as part of their identification as adults and as wholesome persons. It is necessary that absolutely everyone under a government of unification must become involved in politics, and must become a full participant in the consensus making process of the community. The sense of ownership over public institutions must be restored to the public, and Africans must be taught the true value of their African citizenship and entitlements if they are to be productive in all fields. After all Africa is theirs.
