ONGOING FAIRTRADE CAMPAIGN
Campaign began in October 2005 AFRICAN UNIFICATION FRONT FAIRTRADE COFFEE CAMPAIGN African Trade & Economic & Agricultural Reforms
The AUF is inaugurating a new campaign to promote fair trade with Africa and economic reforms. The campaign is primarily targeting the coffee industry. AUF Vice President Caroline Kamau will be chairing the campaign.
The agenda of the AUF Fairtrade Coffee Campaign includes the following:
* Calling for reparations and international trade reforms * Campaigning for African economies to gain control over exports and imports, to ensure a favourable balance of trade
* Campaigning for fair-trade-certified buying prices, for coffee and other African agricultural produce
* Campaigning for urgent attention at the high unemployment rate in Africa – directly (formation of new industries, promoting African entrepreneurship, preference for African produce) or indirectly (policy changes)
* Expansion of African workers’ rights, and ending their exploitation
* Expansion of equality within African societies
* Formulating policies on fair-trade reforms and presenting them to relevant government bodies
* Opening the coffee campaign with an open letter listing our demands, a letter to be sent to Nestle and other coffee buying companies, to the newspapers of coffee producing countries, and to coffee unions
* Review of ‘loan’ and ‘aid’ systems, and the selling away of Africa’s wealth in exchange for them
* To encourage trans-African trade, and to prioritise it
* Uniting African Coffee growers’ unions and co-operatives
